Mirrors of Moscow

Journalist Louise Bryant offers a vivid portrait of revolutionary Russia in this collection of sketches and interviews. Travelling through Moscow and Petrograd soon after the October Revolution, she meets politicians, workers, soldiers, and intellectuals who are trying to build a new society amid civil war and scarcity. Bryant’s profiles of figures such as Lenin, Trotsky, and lesser known activists mix personal description with political commentary. She shows crowded meetings, food queues, and improvised offices where policies with global consequences are debated. Sympathetic to the ideals of social change yet attentive to hardship and contradiction, Bryant gives readers a sense of the excitement and uncertainty that marked the early Soviet period. The book reads as both travel narrative and political reportage, capturing voices and scenes that later histories often smooth away. It is a key document for anyone interested in the human face of the Russian Revolution.
